The University of Bologna (UNIBO) is known as the oldest University in the Western world. UNIBO is a member of the major European Networks and stakeholders’ thematic groups, including the 5GPPP the Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the 6G Infrastructure Association (6G IA), and the Networld2020 European Technology Platforms (ETP). UNIBO is an ETSI and 3GPP full member. Within UNIBO, the Digicomm Group has been addressing research activities related to Non-terrestrial Networks since early 2000.

What is your organization’s role in the project? What unique contribution does it bring to the team?

UNIBO leads the coordination of the 6G-NTN project, ensuring effective and efficient management of the study. Drawing upon its extensive expertise in satellite and terrestrial air-interfaces, UNIBO will contribute to the design and performance evaluation of NTN-friendly waveforms and physical layer algorithms, interference management, as well as their impact on the architecture and system level design.

Why is this project important for your organization?

The 6G-NTN vision is an NTN component natively integrated into the future 6G system that is able to provide disruptive performance with respect to the current 5G NTN. This will be reached by researching and developing the innovative technical, regulatory, and standardization enablers to meet the target user service performance. In this framework, UNIBO will leverage the project’s outcomes across three primary avenues outlined in its mandate: research, teaching, and knowledge transfer. Specifically, building upon the advancements beyond the current state of the art achieved by the 6G-NTN project, UNIBO will identify and cultivate new research domains. Additionally, the high-education courses offered by UNIBO will be enhanced through the project results, thereby enhancing the employability of UNIBO graduates. Lastly, UNIBO will leverage the project outcomes to facilitate knowledge transfer to local, national, and European companies, thereby bolstering the competitiveness of the European industry and SMEs in the rapidly evolving domain of Terrestrial and Satellite integrations for NTN systems.
